The Time

Her hands were shaking while lifting up the coffee cup from the dining table. She took a sip from her trembling lips and looked at him.

“Is this the time for us to part ways?”

He looked directly into her deep green eyes and tried to smile. He was tired from the fight last night and did not know what to say or even how to speak about it.

She wiped the perspiration from her brows while he took some time munching on the sandwich. With one last gulp, he finished the coffee and without looking at her this time said, “I don’t know what else to say.”

She smirked while a tear that was struggling to stay inside suddenly trickled down her cheek. She took her time wiping it and continued sipping coffee.

“It’s not my fault,” he continued, “and neither is it yours. It’s the circumstances, that were not under our control. We tried our best to mend this relationship. We should have done this earlier. Not that it’s too late, but I don’t know if it’s the right time now. We have seen such a wonderful life together and we had always hoped to be happy like this always. But we can’t control everything.”

He looked up at her. She was controlling hard not to break down. Her blank eyes were fixed on the coaster. The coffee was cold now but she did not know that.

He kept talking, “Life is full of surprises. We don’t know what will happen next. The good thing is that we now know what we can do together and what we can do being apart. We are not the same school friends who started dating and then became jealous of each other’s friends. We are two grown ups who know very well what life is and what are the possibilities before us.”

“The thing is,” he continued, “we both are to be blamed. There is no third person who can be blamed for what has happened between us.”

She nodded in agreement.

“Apology will not work here,” he said. “This time it is something we both need to decide upon in a grave manner. We can’t afford to be impulsive.”

She wiped her teary eyes and stood up. “The kids wanted to go to this new movie. Let’s take them tonight,” she said.

He smiled for the first time in weeks and went to work.
